London-based design studio Tonkin Liu has recently overhauled the Dover Esplanade in Kent, England. The project was developed to drive cultural creative regeneration in England’s seaside resorts. The Esplanade was particularly important as it serves as the backdrop for many ferry and cruise passengers, and is equally significant for Drover residents. Its new design incorporates the architectural language of Dover’s identity with the gentle nature of waves on the sheltered beach. Much of the design is also inspired by the undulating topography of the White Cliffs of Dover. By looking for inspiration in the context of Dover as well as the broader context of the sea, Tonkin Liu has added something very special to the public realm.
