Located in Water Mill, New York, House by the Pond was a project that was aimed at satisfying environmental regulations, site constraints, and solar orientation. The end result is a two story home that offers an open, lofty, single story pavilion that provides incredible light and views of the of the yard and pool area, along with views of wildlife inhabiting the nearby pond.
Stelle Architects chose anodized aluminum doors, windows and trim, cedar and cement board siding as the home’s primary exterior materials. Materials were selected for their low low maintenance, modest cost, long-term durability, and sustainable nature.
In addition to utilizing Eco-friendly materials, the House by the Pond’s position on the site was optimized for optimal solar head gain in the winter. Summertime heat is also kept at bay without the need for air conditioning thanks to innovative materials and an advanced building insulation system. These qualities also helped the structure exceed the requirements of the energy star rating system.
The House by the Pond has been awarded by the Boston Society of Architects and it won the AIA New York Housing Design Award.
