Designed by Heliotrope Architects, Lone Madrone Retreat is a unique home surrounded by the inviting greenery of Washington state’s Orcas Island. The home is intended to immerse inhabitants with nature, while providing a barrier to inclement weather.
The 1,600-square-foot contemporary home is located within the San Juan Islands National Monument, which is home to extremely sensitive shorelines and marine environment. As such, designers were careful to ensure the home didn’t impact its surroundings. A garden roof was employed to replace the landscape that was lost following construction. Even storm-water flows were engineered to replicate the pre-construction condition.
Local materials were used throughout the construction. Inside, contemporary furniture and an abundance of wood create a modern, inviting cabin fit for quiet, contemplation, and a great place to enjoy nature.
