The MIT Media Lab is a unique department within the MIT School of Architecture and Planning. Devoted to a wide range of research projects, the Media Lab has been responsible for a number of innovations that transcend multimedia, design, and technology. The Lab’s purpose of “inventing a better future” required a better environment for student and faculty to collaborate, and Tokyo-based Maki and Associates was more that suited for the task. The new 163,000 square feet of laboratory, office, and meeting space is designed to not to showcase the department’s research endeavors, but to also foster creative energy within. Groundbreaking for the new MIT Media Lab commenced in the middle of 2008 and occupancy finally took place in 2009.
