Concrete Architectural Associates was tapped for the interior design of the Mazzo restaurant in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The building itself posed a challenge as it’s narrow and very deep — a typical Amsterdam building. But the shape of the building ultimately helped guide the restaurant’s design and helped determine positions of specific spaces, such as where the bar or kid’s area were to be placed. Materials used at Mazzo include concrete, chipped brickwork, stone, pinewood and raw steel. The exposure of steel beams and columns also add to the design’s use of honest and simple materials, as they don’t distract the guests’ eye and underlines the fact that the restaurant focuses on the food.
